Welcome

Welcome to Salzburg!

The UNESCO World Heritage City of Salzburg has deep-rooted, vibrant traditions. It is a small, world-class town with an excellent reputation for superlative musical and cultural events.

The legacy of the Prince-Archbishopric is manifested in the culture and in the churches of the Old Town, while contemporary trends and art open up the apparent classical, conservative façade. Where the prince-archbishops once demonstrated their power and magnificence, there are now bustling markets and century-old traditional shops. There is a feast for the eye – from the hand-forged iron guild signs in the Getreidegasse to the displays of international brands and charming passageways in the Old Town. It becomes clear why in 1997 UNESCO awarded the ensemble of church towers, hills, and fortress the title of World Heritage Site.

Mozart was a native Salzburger; when he was born, Salzburg was a prince-archbishopric, an ecclesiastical city-state of the Holy Roman Empire.

Christmas in Salzburg

Christmas in Salzburg
The enchanting ambiance of Salzburg sets the stage for the most wonderful time of the year: Christmas! The festive, illuminated Christmas markets, Advent concerts, and traditional folk customs captivate visitors of all ages.

As November draws to a close, the city's festive decorations shine even brighter and the delightful scents of roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, and delicious cookies fill the streets of the historic district.

Taking a stroll through Salzburg during the Christmas season is an unforgettable experience. The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt, located in the shadow of the cathedral, is a magical place to explore. You'll discover an array of handcrafted ornaments, seasonal treats, and the famous mulled wine, Glühwein, which warms both the body and the spirit. Additionally, families often flock to the delightful "Advent Magic" market at Hellbrunn Palace where you can find a wide selection of culinary treats as well as traditional arts & crafts. For a peaceful Advent market away from crowds, the Christmas market on Mirabell Square is also highly recommended. The Glanegg Advent Farmers' Market is a true insider tip. It is all about wild game meat, wood, and creating an authentic Christmas ambiance. Don't forget to explore the Christmas market at Hohensalzburg Fortress as well.

From the end of November until the beginning of January, you can be witness to an array of eerily captivating moments, when Krampus and Perchten get up to their mischief in the streets of Salzburg. Parades featuring these two eerie figures are a deeply rooted folk tradition in Austria. Other than visits by Saint Nicholas and his companions, a variety of other Advent events fascinate guests with their magic: Salzburg Advent Singing in the Festspielhaus, and Advent concerts at the Hohensalzburg Fortress which can be combined with an enchanting dinner within the ancient castle walls.

A special tip: Visit the Christmas Wonderworld at St Peter's Abbey Culinarium. The Christmas decor is personally designed by restaurateur Veronika Kirchmair, creating a stylish and tranquil atmosphere. A traditional mulled wine stand offers warm homemade beverages and a variety of delightful sweets and savory treats. Adding to the Christmas Wonder World experience is the presence of a brass ensemble.

As a city of music, Salzburg is also proud to be the place where the song “Silent Night” was born. You can take a journey through and around Salzburg and follow the steps of the composers Gruber and Mohr.

Attractions

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Hohensalzburg Fortress
Not without reason is the majestic fortress complex considered the symbol of the Mozart town. Hohensalzburg Fortress, begun in the 11th century, is one of the largest fortified complexes in Europe and has never been conquered. Today it offers visitors unique historical insights far back into the Middle Ages. The Hoher Stock with its magnificently decorated rooms is particularly impressive; the Golden Room with its elaborately designed tiled stove is one of the finest late Gothic secular rooms in Europe. In the Magic Theatre, visitors take a fascinating journey through time in the footsteps of Prince-Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, who expanded the fortress around 1500. With music, light effects, and video installations, it is an experience for all the senses.

Mirabell Palace

Mirabell Palace
The Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his mistress, Salome Alt. The famous Marble Hall was the banquet hall, where Leopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl made music and entertained royal guests.
The beautiful Mirabell Gardens are laid out geometrically, which is typical for the Baroque period. They offer an impressive view of the cathedral with the fortress in the background.

Salzburg Cathedral

Salzburg Cathedral
At the center of the city, Salzburg Cathedral with its impressive dome and two towers, is a magnificent example of Early Baroque architecture. It has quite unique architectural features, with three gates and seven bells, all individually named.

Hotels

Hotel Goldgasse

Hotel Goldgasse is Salzburg’s one and only Small Luxury Hotel. A rare jewel that is steeped in 700 years of history.
It’s tucked away in one of the oldest, narrowest, and quietest alleys of Salzburg’s Old Town, yet it’s right where the Salzburg Festival happens. All the major sights, from the Cathedral, the Salzburg Residenz, Mozartplatz square, as well as the Festival Halls, are well within walking distance.

Rooms & Suites

Combining tradition and open-mindedness. Every single one of its 16 rooms with their thick walls, slanted ceilings, and blockstrip flooring is imbued with history and will tell you a story about Salzburg. They are variously called the Magic Flute, La Bohème, Don Giovanni, or Il Trovatore. Over-sized prints by Luigi Caputo project memorable moments of Festival productions onto the furniture and the walls. Artistic lamps crafted by Barovier & Toso, the oldest Venetian glass manufacturer, create enchanting effects and an elegant atmosphere.
Our tip: The Jedermann roof-top suite, which comes with a small private roof-top terrace gives you the most breathtaking view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Dine & Drink

For over 500 years, the building housed a coppersmith’s workshop. Its heritage is still palpable today, in the shape of copper-colored egg pod chairs in the hotel itself, and delicious meals served in copper dishes down in the restaurant. The Gasthof Goldgasse restaurant boasts a One-Toque rating by Gault-Millau. Let our kitchen crew work their magic and delight you in our wood-paneled dining room with delicious breakfasts and superb modern cuisine.

Boutiquehotel Amadeus

Hotel Amadeus, a building full of nooks and crannies is located on Linzer Gasse, one of the main historic pedestrian streets in Salzburg’s Old Town. Linzer Gasse offers numerous trendy boutique stores, cafés, and bars, making it the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town on the right-hand side of the Salzach River.

About the Hotel

All the major sights are just a stone’s throw away. No matter whether you’re looking to explore the City of Mozart on your own, with your travel companion, or with your family, Hotel Amadeus is the perfect place to start your adventure. Built in the characteristic style of Salzburg’s Old Town, Hotel Amadeus is located next to St. Sebastian’s Church. What is now a boutique hotel began its journey as a bathhouse in the sixteenth century. Behind the Baroque windows, rib vaults, massive pillars, narrow stone staircases, blockstrip floors, and wood-beamed ceilings give the hotel its one-of-a-kind atmosphere. You’d be excused for thinking that young Mozart himself would be coming around the corner in an instant.

Rooms & Suites

Hotel Amadeus is the place where comfortable living and a bit of tongue-in-cheek nostalgia meet. A protected historic building, it has been modernized with its status and relevance for Salzburg in mind, giving it its characteristic flair: The twenty rooms in the hotel will charm you with their colored features, their authentic antique wooden furniture, and selected unique pieces, their box-spring beds or four-poster beds perfect for snuggling up in. Our rooms come with en-suite bathrooms full of romantic, luxurious amenities like freestanding bathtubs, high-end showers, and certified organic skincare products by Maria Pieper, a Salzburg-based entrepreneur.

Eat & Drink

Treat yourself to a cup of coffee, organic tea, or a bottle of wine straight from our honesty bar and savor the peace and quiet on our wooden terrace on the second floor. Admire the view of the historic St. Sebastian’s Cemetery, the final resting place of famous personages such as Paracelsus or Mozart’s wife and his father. A camposanto cemetery dating back to the Baroque Era, St. Sebastian’s Cemetery is a verdant oasis of calm.

Hotel Stein

A signature building in the cool and vibrant style of the 1950s, Hotel Stein boasts swanky Italian glass designer pieces and the most breathtaking view of the city center.

Urban living in Salzburg’s Old Town - Adults Only

Located at the very heart of the City of Mozart, this boutique hotel is a synthesis of old and new impulses that is well worth exploring. Hotel Stein is situated on the right-hand side of the Salzach River, a hip and trendy part of the city that is distinguished by its young cultural scene. In no other hotel in Salzburg do flamboyant design, art, and urban lifestyle coalesce as effortlessly as in Hotel Stein. Original pieces from the 1950s at the hotel entrance and in the lobby on the one hand and Venetian light fixtures designed by Barovier & Toso on the other set each other off, creating the typical Salzburg flair that has earned the city the nickname of “the most Italian city north of the Alps”.

Rooms & Suites

A glass installation reflecting multiple light sources stretches across seven floors, taking you up to the hotel’s designer bedrooms and suites. Hotel Stein is adults only, and its rooms, with their urban chic, their large-scale city snapshots by Luigi Caputo, and their Italian designer lighting, are as diverse as its guests from all over the world. Some of the rooms have luxury features such as stucco ceilings, while others give you the most spectacular view of the skyline of the historic Old Town.

Dine & Drink

The hotel is crowned by Michelin-starred chef Andreas Senn's Steinterrasse, a one-of-a-kind rooftop terrace plus bar, where a range of culinary delights await you, no matter whether you’re looking for breakfast, a couple of cool drinks, or a fine-dining experience with the rooftops of Salzburg stretching below you. All of this makes Hotel Stein the place to be in Salzburg, a place that stays with you, a place where memories are made.

Special Features

One of the many fantastic things about Hotel Stein is the attentive and personal service of its staff. The rooms all come with espresso machines, delicious teas, and high-end natural cosmetics by Saint Charles. Guests are also welcome to make use of our hotel spa and relaxation room, book a massage, take a sauna, or work out at our small gym.

artHotel Blaue Gans

Die Blaue Gans is located in the middle of the trendy World Heritage district, opposite the Festspielhaus and at the end of the world-famous Getreidegasse, just a few steps from Mozart's birthplace.
The Blue Goose was once a hostel along Europe's most important trade routes towards Venice. Now it is the first and only art hotel in Salzburg. After several conversions and renovations, a tastefully furnished hotel was created over the years, in which contemporary art is omnipresent. 120 art objects accompany the guests in the rooms, corridors, entrance area, and wine archive.

Rooms & Suites

Right angles are scarce in the house, the guest rooms all have different layouts, and the walls are crooked and bulbous. An off-the-shelf hotel environment is not possible here. Instead, the focus of the furnishings is on craftsmanship: solid carpentry, poured concrete tiles, casement windows, and carefully laid stone floors. The design plays with elements typical of Salzburg (building) culture (wood, sandstone, felt, dirndl fabrics), with the green of the loden coats and with natural surfaces.

Dine & Drink

With a history of around 670 years, the restaurant Die Blaue Gans is the oldest inn in the city. The century-old restaurant with its historic arches is the heart of the house.
The modern Brasserie Bar is the counterpart to the traditional restaurant. Guests are spoiled with fancy drinks & delicacies. Small snacks and finger food are also served.
In the Wine Archive, guests can dine at long family-style tables, and indulge in wine tastings and the cuisine of the Speisenmanufaktur

Festspiele

Festspiele
The best example of the international importance of the baroque city is undoubtedly the more than 100-year-old Salzburg Festival. Every summer the whole city is turned into a stage. The historic concert halls, squares, and alleys become the setting for top-class orchestral arrangements and world-famous plays such as "Jedermann" by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. This year's Salzburg Festival presents a varied program at 15 venues over 43 days with 179 performances. Opera highlights include Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" and Verdi's "Macbeth" and "Falstaff". The 2023 concert program reads like a "Who's Who" of the classical music scene: the Vienna Philharmonic, the Mozarteum Orchestra, the Camerata Salzburg, Christian Thielemann, Igor Levit, Riccardo Muti, and Franz Welser-Möst are among the supreme disciplines on the top-class repertoire.

Old Town Walk
A leisurely stroll through the Old Town is best started at the horse pond on Herbert von Karajan Platz, with a magnificent view of the festival district crowned by the fortress. Charming old passageways with fine boutiques lead through to the famous Getreidegasse, where wrought-iron guild signs hang above tastefully decorated shop windows displaying exquisite jewelry, colorful dirndls, fine lingerie, and exclusive bags – traditional Salzburg companies side by side with international brands. The market on University Square is worth a visit. The patrician houses and the old court pharmacy on the nearby Alter Markt, and the neighboring Goldgasse with its antique shops, capture the atmosphere of historical Salzburg.
