Riedinger Waterfalls in the Hochkönig Region in Austria

In the heart of the Hochkönig Region, the hike to the Riedinger Waterfalls offers amazing views, tranquil woods, and a touch of history. This hike, beginning at the Arthurhaus, is more than just a walk along the mountain range the Hochkönig—it's an experience that calms both body and soul.

Starting the day at the Arthurhaus, breathing in that fresh mountain air, and setting off on a trail that promised a mix of adventure and relaxation. If you're into scenic hikes, this one's definitely going to make your must-do list.

So, here’s how it went down. We walked from the Arthurhaus, a spot that’s already got killer views, and headed left onto trails 401A and 436. Now, these trails easy to follow, and the path is smooth enough for just about anyone. We wandered along, taking in the sights, and of course, we had to stop and say hi to the cows grazing nearby. Seriously, what’s a hike in the Alps without a few cow encounters, right? Just be aware when you are hiking with a dog like we are. We always carry the dog past the cows so we don’t make them anxious or disturb them.

About 30 minutes in, after strolling through a mix of woods and meadows, we reached the Windraucheggalm. This place has been around for 135 years, and it’s exactly the kind of cozy alpine hut you dream about when planning a mountain hike. We decided it was the perfect spot for a quick break. And by “quick break,” I mean indulging in some of their homemade juice and strudel. Trust me, nothing beats the taste of fresh juice and a warm slice of strudel when you’re surrounded by those stunning views. They also serve milk and cheese from their own cows, so yeah, it’s all as fresh as it gets.

With our stomachs full and happy, we continued on our way to the waterfalls. Just as we were entering the Rieding Valley, we stumbled upon some remnants of an old ski jumping training center. This place was active from 1969 to 1982, and even though it’s not in use anymore, it was pretty cool to see a piece of the region’s history just sitting there in the middle of our hike.

But the real star of the show? The Riedinger Waterfalls. As soon as we entered the valley, we could see the waterfalls cascading down in the distance—a total showstopper, especially on a hot summer day. The hike up to the first two waterfalls was easy, and once we got there, we were greeted by the sound of rushing water and a cool mist in the air. The little plunge pools at the base of the falls were just begging us to dip our feet in. It was the perfect way to cool off and take in the beauty around us.
And let’s not forget about the views. The entire hike, you’re surrounded by the majestic Hochkönig mountain range, making every step a picture-perfect moment. On the way back, we retraced our steps with those incredible peaks in the background, feeling pretty satisfied with how the day turned out.
