Maledives Good to Know

Welcome to the Maldives, the sunny side of Life, your dream tropical destination where the sun awaits to embrace you just as warmly as the Maldivian hospitality.

Believe it or not, the Maldives is the flattest country in the world! 1% land. 99% water. The Maldives covers an area of 90,000 square kilometers, with 1,192 islands, situated on the equator.

It is home to an incredible underwater ecosystem with 2,000 diverse marine species that rivals rainforests in biodiversity. A paradise suited to all levels of divers and snorkelers.

The first settlements of the Maldives date back to 2,500 years ago. Because of its location people from different cultures came together to create their own traditions unique to the Maldives.

The native language is Dhivehi, an Indo-Aryan based on Sanskrit. Thaana is the current writing system and was developed in the 18th century based on Arabic vowels and Hindu-Arabic consonants.

Unique to the Maldives is also the one-island=one-resort concept. Each individual resort is on its own uninhabited island to guarantee the utmost tranquility and privacy.
