Day Trip from Salzburg: Ice Cave & Five Fingers

Ice cave
During our stay in Salzburg, we decided to take a day trip out to the Dachstein region. It turned into one of the most memorable experiences of the whole trip. Between exploring a magical ice cave and standing on the edge of the Five Fingers viewing platform, it honestly felt like stepping into a postcard.

First Stop: The Ice Cave
We started the day with the Ice Cave tour. To get there, it’s about a 15-minute uphill hike, which was just enough to get our blood pumping before stepping into the chilly cave. Inside, we joined a guided tour and were immediately blown away by how otherworldly it looked: glistening ice formations, frozen waterfalls, and huge chambers that seemed to glow in the dim light.
Our guide was fantastic, explaining how the cave was formed and pointing out little details we never would have noticed on our own. The coolest part? They actually host piano concerts inside one of the larger chambers of the cave! I can only imagine how surreal it must sound with the acoustics bouncing off the ice walls.

Cable Car to the Summit
After warming up a little outside, we hopped on the cable car, which carried us up to the Krippenstein plateau. The ride itself was beautiful, with views opening up more and more as we climbed higher.

The Five Fingers Hike
From the top station, it was about a 30-minute hike to the famous Five Fingers outlook. The trail itself was stunning, so peaceful with fresh mountain air, and plenty of viewpoints along the way. And then suddenly, there it was: the platform itself stretching out like a giant hand over a 400-meter drop.
Walking out onto the “fingers” was both thrilling and a little nerve-wracking (especially the one with the glass floor). But the reward is absolutely worth it: the view over Hallstatt and the lake is jaw-dropping. It’s the kind of sight that makes you just stand still and take it all in.

Why I Loved This Day Trip
What I really liked about this trip was how well it combined everything. A little bit of adventure (the hike and the caves), some fascinating history and geology, and then those unbeatable alpine views. And the fact that it’s all doable in one day from Salzburg makes it super convenient.

If you’re in Salzburg and looking for a mix of nature, adventure, and views that will stay with you forever, the Ice Cave and Five Fingers combo is a must.
